August BioBriefing: “Cutting Edge Science: Award-winning Research and Commercialization”
Wednesday, August 17, 2022 | 2:00 - 3:00 PM | VIRTUAL
Join us virtually Wednesday, August 17th from 2:00 – 3:00 pm as we take a deep dive into innovative research and product development happening across the Delaware life science landscape. We’ll learn about award-winning technologies being developed by new companies – recent recipients of important state grant programs for science and tech entrepreneurs including the EDGE and CAT Grants and StartUp302 – and a high school student who earned international recognition for her research.
Isha Kanchana – Newark Charter School Isha represented the state in the finals of the national BioGENEius competition at June’s BIO International Convention in San Diego. Isha will provide an overview of her project, “AI Based Automated Algorithm to Measure Bacterial Type IV Pili Amount and Length,” which took top honors in the Delaware Biotech Institute’s statewide competition.
Alexander Colton – Cosmos Pharmaceuticals Cosmos Pharmaceuticals personalized medication lock called FortisKap provides a solution to combat prescription medication abuse and improve individualized patient care. FortisKap, a universal pill bottle cap, secures a patient’s prescription with their unique biometric signature and tracks robust medication usage throughout the course of treatment. The company was awarded an EDGE grant this year for equipment needed to commercialize their product and for office space at UD’s STAR campus.
Jack Scanlon – Hartlon Hartlon has developed a bioresorbable vascular stent that is designed to eliminate pain, non-healing sores, and risk of limb amputation caused by poor blood flow below-the-knee. After a medical doctor unblocks an artery, the patented Hartlon’s stent is designed to be inserted into the opening to provide temporary support until the artery heals and then the stent dissolves leaving the artery in a longer lasting natural open condition. The company was a recipient of a 2021 CAT Grant from the Delaware Biotechnology Institute and is a new 2022 winner of a state EDGE grant – funding will be used for laboratory space, manufacturing services, and demonstration of performance with a preclinical study.
Theresa Litherland – Resonate Forward The company was established to commercialize medical device technology originally developed at the University of Delaware to reduce the symptoms of tremor and freezing in Parkinson’s disease. A winner of a Startup302 award, the funding will make it possible for Resonate Forward to finish manufacturing design and FDA filing for their RMband device. Resonate Forward also received an EDGE grant in 2021 and has been supported by the Horn Proof of Concept program in the 5 years since launch. The company is working to launch its first product by the end of 2022.
