Delivering a Skilled Workforce for Delaware Life Science Manufacturers

Investment in the US manufacturing sector is accelerating, as the pandemic and international trade tensions have exposed the great risks of over-reliance on foreign supply chains for medicine and other essential goods. Both businesses and national policymakers are prioritizing this strategic shift and advanced manufacturing – in biopharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and instrumentation – is thriving both regionally and in Delaware. The state’s life science sector now employs more than 11,000 and recent announcements of significant company expansions, site redevelopments, and major new investments are poised to create hundreds if not thousands of new jobs.

This surge in hiring will occur at a time when existing advanced manufacturers often struggle to meet current talent demands. While there remains an ongoing need for R&D-based talent including individuals with bachelor’s and advanced degrees, many companies cannot fill skilled roles such as technicians, manufacturing operations, and quality assurance – positions that makeup about one-third of life science industry jobs.

Our BioBriefing will bring voices from industry, education, and the state together to examine how Delaware can ensure a ready, well-trained talent pipeline that secures the state’s future as a life science leader.

Panelists include:
Bryan Fisher | Delaware Sites General Manager | Agilent Technologies
Dr. Feng Han
| Senior Vice President of Operations | Wilmington Pharmatech
Diane Humenik
| Director, Human Resources Business Partner | AstraZeneca
Joseph Jones
| Superintendent | New Castle County Vo-Tech School District
Dr. Katherine Lakofsky
| Director, Workforce Development & Community Education | Delaware Technical Community College
Scott Malfitano
| Chair | Delaware Workforce Development Board
