Delaware Life Science, Business, and Economic Development Experts Discuss Delaware's Bioscience Future

NEWARK, DELAWARE - Today a group of national and Delaware based partners hosted the Delaware Bioscience Business Roundtable (BBR) event at the John H. Ammon Medical Education Center at Christiana Hospital which featured Governor Jack Markell. Bioscience represents a major source of potential economic development in Delaware. In 2008, nearly 12,000 people were employed by the industry. Industry activities generate an additional 16,000 jobs annually in addition to the 12,000 employed directly by the industry. www.cadsr.udel.edu.

BBR is a unified voice of leaders representing the biotechnology, life sciences, and biomedical research industries -collectively known as the bioscience community. Its mission is to promote public policies that on a local, state, and federal level safeguard and sustain America's place as the world leader in bioscience. The three tenets of BBR are to promote access, prevention, and encourage innovation by building bridges of understanding between government leaders, the business community, and academia on key issues facing Delaware and the United States' dynamic bioscience community.

"Delaware's great diversity in the biosciences is evidenced by those in attendance at this forum today representing academic and medical research institutions, small and large global research and manufacturing enterprises as well as the businesses that support them. Working together, we can expand the current base of research and commercialization that will make evident across the country that Delaware is the place for bioscience," said Bob Dayton, President of the Delaware BioScience Association.

Partners hosting today's event included: Delaware BioScience Association, Delaware State Chamber of Commerce, Delaware AFL-CIO, Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce, We Work for Health, Greater Newark Network, Delaware Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, Delaware HIV Consortium, New Castle County Chamber of Commerce, the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA), the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
