Athena Biotechnologies, Inc., a privately-held biotechnology company, was formed in January 2005 by the merger of PharmaLeads, Inc. and VerdiZyme, Inc. Prior to the merger, VerdiZyme acquired the assets of Optigenix, Inc.

At Athena Biotechnologies, Inc. we focus our platform technologies on cultivating new bacteria from the 99% of bacteria that are currently non-culturable in laboratory situations. We are committed to finding and exploiting commercial opportunities based on our unique ability to grow bacteria in culture that have never before been cultured. Among these new bacteria may be those that cause well-known diseases such as cancers or non-healing wounds in humans or diseases in agricultural crops. Novel bacteria also afford opportunities as unprecedented industrial biocatalysts, such as our newly discovered ABZ bacteria, that produce ethanol at high temperatures from sugars or cellulose, while others may be useful sources of new therapeutics. AthenaBio continues to vigorously grow and defend its intellectual property estate in this exciting new territory as we develop and exploit the technologies and culture bacteria that are non-culturable by others methods.
