Delaware job seekers experience robust employer presence at EST Career Fair

Newark, Del.-For those who keep reading reports about the struggling “jobless recovery,” the 2011 University of Delaware Engineering, Science and Technology Career Fair indicated otherwise.

Over 100 employers and 1100 job seekers attended the EST Career Fair held at the UD Bob Carpenter Center on February 17. The fair is a result of a recently established partnership between the University of Delaware Career Services Center (UD CSC) and the Delaware BioScience Association (Delaware Bio). This year VWR participated as a platinum sponsor and Aerotek as a gold sponsor.

“Combining forces with Delaware Bio resulted in the best employer turnout in the history of the career fair,” said UD CSC Director Matthew Brink.  “Specifically, we saw a 30 percent increase in employer attendance, when comparing this year to last year.”

The high employer turnout also points to growth within the engineering, life science, technology and biotechnology fields.  Several employers in attendance indicated they anticipate expanding significantly this year.

“This career fair was a win-win for both employers and job candidates,” said Delaware Bio President Bob Dayton. “Job seekers, both UD students and experienced industry professionals in transition, got to meet with a diverse array of companies with real employment opportunities, and employers got to meet highly qualified candidates with a variety of backgrounds and experiences.”

The high number of employers and job seekers in attendance was a clear indication that the timing and scope of the event was right.  There was a significant and steady flow of job seekers “working the fair” from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“The number of organizations present and the number of positions being offered is a good sign,” said Brink.  “Let us all hope this trend continues.”
